Book 2 Fellowship of the Ring Chapter 4 and 5

Gandalf leading the way through dark passage ways
In chapters 4 and 5, they get snowed out of the mountain pass and so the 2 men make a path for the rest of the company back out of the pass and then the only way to go through is through the Mines of Moria. There they fight off orcs and a Balrog. Gandalf takes his last stand there trying to protect the company from the Balrog and does not make it all the way across the bridge before if fell. I was sad at this part because I thought Gandalf was a great and strong character.

  1. Shoul have checked the weather report before they left Rivendell...Heavy snows projected in the mountains with 24-36" of accumulation by tonight, while the mines of Moria will see scattered orcs and a 70% chance of balrog. Either way it looks like its going to be a messy commute. Elrond, back to you.

  2. This is a tragic moment! I always felt they were safer when Gandalf was there because he is so wise and is an indomitable force against evil!

  3. At the pivotal moment of flight from Moria on the Bridge of Khazad-Dum, in the book, Gandalf the Grey-soon to be White says to the Balrog "You cannot pass." As opposed to the sensational movie version, "You shall NOT pass." 'Shall' used in this context seems to indicate some sort of future action or event where the Fellowship may give the Balrog a weekend pass or something. 'Cannot' implies prohibition, access is denied, no soup for you, back to the shadows with you foul thing. Which is correct?
